Special feature: 4th British player to be in the top 10
Left-hander Cameron Norrie is one of the most established names in British tennis, having long played in the shadow ofAndy Murray. His career was marked by victory at the Indian Wells Masters 1000 in 2021. Seeded No. 21, he seized his chance after a draw that offered him Schwartzman (No. 11), Bautista Agut (No. 15) and Dimitrov (No. 23) as his nearest challengers.
Norrie’s background also makes him a globetrotter. Born in 1995 in South Africa to two parents of British origin, he grew up in New Zealand from the age of three. Norrie represented New Zealand until 2013, when he took his parents’ nationality after breaking into the top 10 at junior level.
Norrie, whose career took another dimension at Indian Wells in 2021, reached his highest ranking at the end of 2022 (8th) after playing his first Grand Slam semi-final in front of his home crowd at Wimbledon.
A fast riser in the junior top 10, Cameron Norrie became British at the age of 17 in order to benefit from the support of the British FA. After disappointing results in Europe, Norrie opted to go into exile and join the American university circuit at Texas Christian University, playing for the Horned Frogs where he became the number one player on the circuit. He was named three times in the All American team, which rewards the best players of the season.
Cameron Norrie turned professional after an excellent university career, but was slow to make his mark on the ATP circuit. He struggled to break into the world’s Top 50 in the 2019 season, after reaching the semi-finals of the Acapulco tournament, where he beat Diego Schwartzman. But it was two years later, in 2021, that he finally confirmed his place at the highest level with his triumph at Indian Wells. He followed that up with a semi-final at Wimbledon (2022), where he was beaten by eventual winner Novak Djokovic. With his dazzling performances, Cameron Norrie established himself in the world’s Top 20 and became an established player on the circuit.
In 2024, injuries did him no favours and he dropped to around fiftieth place.
Cameron Norrie has won five titles since the start of his career: Los Cabos (2021), Delray Beach (2022), Lyon (2022), Rio de Janeiro (2023) and the Cincinnati Masters 1000 (2021). He has also played in ten finals, including Queens (2021) and Buenos Aires (2023).
The Briton has beaten a member of the Top 10 ten times, with his best victory undoubtedly coming against Carlos Alcaraz in the final of the Rio de Janeiro tournament.
Cameron Norrie’s best Grand Slam result came at Wimbledon, where he achieved the feat of reaching the semi-finals. His only major feat in one of the four major tournaments.
Cameron Norrie often comes to the Mouratoglou Tennis Academy to train, particularly during the European clay-court season.
While Cameron Norrie has a notable weakness on serve, where he scores an average of 15% fewer aces and service winners than the other players on the circuit, he makes up for it with his forehand and backhand, his two strong points. With his left-handed forehand, he wins an average of 10% more points than his rivals, and 15% more on the backhand.
Cameron Norrie shares his life with Louise Jacobi, an American businesswoman and designer who has created her own clothing brand, Please Don’t Touch. The Briton is a fan of the Sidney Rabbitohs and the New Zealand All Blacks rugby teams. He is also a fan of the Newcastle United FC football team.
